Domain Expiry Monitoring
Domain expiry monitoring tracks your domain's registration expiry date using RDAP and WHOIS lookups. It warns you well in advance so you never accidentally let a domain lapse -- which could result in lost traffic, email disruption, or even domain squatting.
How It Works
Hoppla queries the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) service for your domain's registration information. If RDAP is not available for the domain's TLD, it falls back to a traditional WHOIS lookup. The check extracts the expiry date, registrar, and registration date from the response.
Subdomain Handling
If your monitor URL contains subdomains (e.g., app.staging.example.com), Hoppla progressively strips subdomains until it finds the registrable domain (example.com). This ensures the check works correctly regardless of how deep the subdomain nesting is. The www. prefix is also automatically stripped.
Configuration
| Setting | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Check interval | Daily | How often to query the domain's registration data. |
The warning and failure thresholds are built into the check logic:
| Days Until Expiry | Status |
|---|---|
| 30+ days | ok |
| 7-29 days | warning |
| Less than 7 days | fail |
Results
Each domain expiry check result includes:
- Status --
ok,warning, orfail - Domain -- The registrable domain that was looked up
- Registrar -- The domain's registrar (e.g., "Cloudflare, Inc.", "GoDaddy")
- Registration date -- When the domain was first registered
- Expiry date -- When the domain registration expires
- Days remaining -- Number of days until the domain expires
- Lookup source -- Whether the data came from RDAP or WHOIS
Alerts
Warning Notification
A warning.domain_expiring notification is sent when the domain's expiry date is fewer than 30 days away. This gives you enough time to renew manually if auto-renewal is not configured with your registrar.
Incident Creation
An incident with the title "Domain expired" and severity minor is created when the domain has fewer than 7 days until expiry or when the lookup fails entirely (e.g., the RDAP/WHOIS server is unreachable or returns an error).
Automatic Resolution
The incident is automatically resolved when the domain is renewed (expiry date moves back above the threshold). The recovery message is: "Domain expiry check passed."
Notification Events
| Event | When |
|---|---|
incident.created | Domain expires in fewer than 7 days or lookup failed |
incident.resolved | Domain was renewed or lookup recovered |
warning.domain_expiring | Domain expires within 30 days |
warning.cleared | Domain was renewed (warning condition resolved) |
