Custom Domains

Use your own domain (e.g., status.yourcompany.com) for your status page instead of the default hoppla.dev subdomain. This gives your status page a branded, professional appearance.

Every status page is also reachable at a {slug}.status.hoppla.dev subdomain out of the box (see Status Pages) -- a custom domain is optional.

Setup Steps

  1. Go to your status page settings in the dashboard and open the Custom Domain section.
  2. Enter your domain (e.g., status.yourcompany.com).
  3. Add a CNAME record at your DNS provider pointing to cname.status.hoppla.dev (see below).
  4. Wait for DNS propagation and verification.
  5. Once verified, a TLS certificate is provisioned automatically.

Your custom domain is live once the certificate is issued, typically within a few minutes.

DNS Configuration

Add a CNAME record at your DNS provider pointing to cname.status.hoppla.dev:

status.yourcompany.com. CNAME cname.status.hoppla.dev.

WARNING

Do not use an A record. The CNAME record is required for both routing and domain verification.

TLS/SSL

TLS certificates are handled automatically:

  • A certificate is provisioned as soon as domain verification succeeds.
  • Certificates are renewed automatically before expiry.
  • No manual certificate management is needed.
  • All traffic is served over HTTPS. HTTP requests are redirected to HTTPS.

Verification

Hoppla verifies domain ownership by checking for the CNAME record pointing to cname.status.hoppla.dev. Verification typically completes within minutes of the DNS record propagating.

The dashboard shows the verification status:

  • Pending -- Waiting for DNS propagation.
  • Verified -- CNAME record confirmed, certificate being issued.
  • Active -- Custom domain is live and serving traffic.

Troubleshooting

Domain stuck in "Pending" status:

  • DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours, though it usually completes much faster.
  • Verify the CNAME record is correct using dig status.yourcompany.com CNAME or an online DNS lookup tool.

Conflicting A records:

  • If your subdomain has an existing A record, it may conflict with the CNAME. Remove the A record before adding the CNAME.

CAA records blocking certificate issuance:

  • If your domain has CAA records, ensure they permit certificate issuance by the certificate authority Hoppla uses. Adding a CAA record for letsencrypt.org is usually sufficient.

ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH:

  • This typically means the certificate has not been issued yet. Wait a few minutes and try again. Check the dashboard for verification status.
